Is the Apple Watch the Next Huge, Medium, or Mini Hit?

Is the Apple Watch the Next Huge, Medium, or Mini Hit?

The Apple Watch isn’t going on sale until next year, but already everyone from Wall Street analysts to luxury fashion executives is trying to handicap future sales of the ground breaking device. Among the finance set, estimates range from a few million to almost 40 million in the first year of sales. “The detail that went into the design, including the watch bands, is impressive and not fully appreciated yet,” UBS analyst Steven Milunovich wrote in his assessment of the watch. He sees 24 million sold in the first year and 40 million in the next year.

One of the most optimistic analysts, Brian White of Cantor Fitzgerald, expects Apple will sell 37 million watches in the first year, outpacing the 20 million iPads sold in the tablet’s first 12 months. “We believe Apple Watch will prove to be a home run with the fastest, new product, first-year unit sales volume in the company’s history,” Fitzgerald said last month on CNBC.

EASY JOB SEARCH - New Mobile/Web Apps That Improve Your Online Job Search

New Startups That Want to Improve Your Online Job Search

In the past several years, mobile technology has simplified a wide range of the cumbersome, time-consuming, and unpleasant chores required of the professional class.
There’s Homejoy to clean your apartment, Uber and Lyft to hail a cab, and more food delivery apps than you can count.

But for all of the solutions created to improve the lifestyles of affluent urbanites, finding a job — the initial step that makes such a lifestyle possible — remains a lengthy and universally miserable process.

Sure, massive job boards like Monster and CareerBuilder alert us to an unprecedented number of potential openings — but who wants to give up hours of their precious leisure time crafting the perfect cover letter, only to submit the application into the Internet equivalent of a black hole?

Why Twitter Is Handing Your Tweets Over to MIT

Though the slogan works for marketing diamonds, perhaps it’s more accurate to say that the Internet is forever. Your LiveJournal from 2002 can still be found, and so can the picture of you from that one night you can’t remember (even though you took it off Facebook).

Now, every tweet ever made public, starting with Twitter founder Jack Dorsey’s first tweet in 2006, is subject to scrutiny by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Laboratory for Social Machines, which aspires to have a better understanding of how information gets disseminated through social media platforms like Twitter. The Wall Street Journal reports that the university “plans to build data visualizations, mobile apps and other tools to ‘create new forms of public communication and social organization.

Facebook Apologizes, Announces New Guidelines for Experimenting on Members

Hot on the heels of its sweeping apology to the LGBT community, Facebook has apologized to its members for conducting emotional experiments on them. You may recall that back in June, the social networking site found itself in hot water for conducting a study in which it filled some News Feeds with positive posts and some with negative posts to see whether it impacted the tone of these people’s subsequent posts. It was essentially a test of emotion virality.

The backlash from that study caught Facebook by surprise, and it scrambled to respond to its users’ anger at becoming de facto guinea pigs. It was an important learning moment for the company. “We were unprepared for the reaction the paper received when it was published and have taken to heart the comments and criticism,” Facebook CTO Mike Schroepfer wrote Thursday. “It is clear now that there are things we should have done differently.”

‘Star Citizen’ Earns Guinness World Record for Insane Crowdfunding Haul

‘Star Citizen’ Earns Guinness World Record for Insane Crowdfunding Haul

The creator of classic video games like Wing Commander has entered the Guinness Book of World Records for Star Citizen, his upcoming space adventure game. Since kicking off a Kickstarter campaign nearly two years ago, Roberts and crew have raised more than $55 million.

That’s not only the largest crowdfunded game of all time, according to Guinness, it’s the largest amount raised for any sort of crowdfunded project. Not bad for a game that initially was seeking just $500,000.

“I sometimes get asked why [I] continue to raise money,” Roberts said in a blog post announcing the news. “Haven’t you already raised enough to make the game? The answer is that Star Citizen isn’t a normal game. It’s not being developed like a normal game and it’s not being funded like a normal game.”

LATEST - Apple Will Announce Its New iPads at an Event on Oct. 16

Apple’s product announcements ain't over until someone other than Bono sings.

The company plans to hold a “special event” Thursday, Oct. 16, in California, according to a report by Re/code’s John Paczkowski, who correctly predicted the timing of Apple’s Sept. 9 event, and who is thought to have terrific sources within Apple.

(Update: After Paczkowski’s piece was published, the Wall Street Journal came out with its own report that confirmed the event’s date.) The announcement is rumoured to concentrate on a new line of improved iPads. Blogs have been whispering that, like the latest iPhone, the new iPad could ship with a bigger screen and also come equipped with fingerprint scanning Touch ID sensors. There may also be a gold option for the new iPad.

Ebola in Texas: Most of the Patient's Contacts Have Been Interviewed

Health officials say they have now interviewed most of the people who had contact with the man in Texas who has Ebola.

As many as 100 people may have had contact with Thomas Eric Duncan, the first Ebola patient diagnosed in the United States. Duncan, a Liberia resident, arrived in Texas recently, and later developed symptoms. He is now being treated at an isolation unit at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas.

Ebola virus is not airborne; it is transmitted through contact with blood or bodily fluids of a symptomatic patient. Investigators are hoping that by monitoring the people who had contact with Duncan, they will be able to react quickly if anyone develops a fever or other signs of Ebola infection. So far, only about a dozen people who had contact with Duncan seem to have had the type of contact that officials consider risky. [Ebola Virus: 5 Things You Should Know]

U.S. DOT set to issue new waste management guidelines for Ebola

The U.S. Department of Transportation is expected to release new guidelines later on Friday that will allow hospitals in Texas to safely dispose of Ebola-infected medical wastes, a DOT official said.

The official said the DOT has issued a special waste management permit that will allow the Dallas hospital caring for the U.S. Ebola patient to transport and dispose of medical waste generated in the care of the patient.

Dallas County officials said separately that a disposal vendor is in place to transfer any Ebola-infected materials from the hospital.

The DOT official said the agency will issue other permits to other states should the need arise.

Scientists Discover Thousands Of Uncharted Mountains Hidden Beneath The Sea

THOUSANDS MOUNTAINS

A new topographic map of Earth's mysterious ocean floor reveals thousands of towering volcanoes, hidden gashes where supercontinents ripped apart and other never-before-seen features once veiled by miles of water and thick sediment.

The topography of Earth's seafloor is as corrugated and bumpy as a book set in Braille. By reading these peaks and ridges, scientists can chronicle the birth of new ocean crust and the past wanderings of Earth's continents.

However, even though the seafloor carries the pivotal clues to plate tectonics, the dry surface of Mars has been detailed more clearly than the ocean's watery depths. The new map, released today (Oct. 2) in the journal Science, promises to fill in some of the blanks. Compared with the previous map, from 1997, the resolution is twice as accurate overall and four times as better in coastal areas and the Arctic, said lead study author David Sandwell, a marine geophysicist at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla, California.
